Light, Motion, and Second Skins: In Conversation with Glow Art Founder Ron Vestal

Born from a vision to liberate fine art from the confines of traditional gallery walls, Glow Art reimagines photography as a dynamic, living medium designed to be worn and experienced every day. Founded by fashion designer and photographer Ron Vestal, known as R. A. Vestal, the brand transforms captured light, vibrant color, and movement into wearable art pieces that merge fine art sensibilities with contemporary fashion.

By turning single photographic frames into bold, expressive garments — from sleek activewear to statement silhouettes — Glow Art empowers individuals to carry ethereal creativity into their daily lives, redefining what it means to live in and embody art.

From high-energy runways like New York Fashion Week to showcase stages across the country, Glow Art continues to prove that fine art belongs in motion. We caught up with creator and founder Ron Vestal to discuss the inspiration behind his luminescent designs, his creative process, and how he turned a passion for light into a movement of wearable art.

Ron Vestal on the Luminescent World of Glow Art

You originally studied film and media at Penn State before discovering your eye for still photography. What was that pivotal moment when you realized light and camera angles were going to be your primary medium?

Film and motion pictures are just that: pictures in motion. The real art starts with a series of stills. If the stills don’t evoke feeling, the motion pictures also will not evoke an emotion.

That’s a great point! Many fine art photographers aim for gallery walls, but you chose the human body as your canvas. What inspired the transition from traditional prints to high-fashion apparel?

Fashion as a medium for art is a gazillion times more dynamic than two dimensional art. You have the opportunity when you create the image and a second, third, fourth opportunity to create when you shoot a model in your fashion.

On your site, you describe Glow Art as “GOD Source inspired photography” meant to expand the conscious and unconscious mind. How does this spiritual or metaphysical connection influence your creative process when setting up a shoot?

The spiritual/metaphysical connection influence takes life at the shoot. It becomes the shoot and manifests that connection in the glorious images the model and I create under the spiritual/metaphysical influence.

Luv that! Your pieces capture an ethereal, glowing quality using everyday elements like lighting, makeup, and subject movement. How do you technically and artistically preserve that vibrant, luminescent energy when translating a photo onto textiles?

The images are photo reactive by nature. When created with alternative lighting the images retain the quality of reacting to different light frequencies. If you are in an environment where lighting fluctuates between ultraviolet and infrared, the fabric comes alive with the change in lighting. It undulates.

Wow, I’m blown away. Transforming a high-resolution photograph into all-over prints on garments like skater dresses, hoodies, and swimwear presents unique challenges. How do you decide which photographic composition fits a specific silhouette or apparel cut?

The digital embossing process is often tedious. There is abundant trial and error. I often want to go back and remake the apparel better, but then my peers tell me it’s great the way it is.

Glow Art has taken center stage at high-profile events, including Designers On Tour NYFW and The Anastasia Magazine Fashion Show. What is it like seeing your static photographic moments come alive on a moving runway?

Fashion shows are super fun. People think the audience gets the most out of the show, but backstage is where all the real excitement is.

You’re very right about that. We’ve been behind the scenes of a few fashion shows and that truly is where all the excitement is! Glow Art centers on the concept that “Art should not only be displayed — it should be lived in.” How do you hope someone feels the moment they put on a Glow Art piece and walk out into the world?

I hope they feel the way they do! People always come to life when they see themselves in one of my pieces.

As it should be. In an industry dominated by fast fashion and trend-chasing, Glow Art stands firm as an artist-led brand. How do you strike the balance between maintaining fine art integrity and scaling a commercial clothing line?

I have never been a trend chaser. I do not believe what looks good or what makes you come alive changes with time. Beauty and art transcend time.

I fully agree with you. Now, just one more question… With gallery pop-ups, fashion week showcases, and an expanding collection, what new artistic themes, product categories, or live experiences are you excited to explore next?

I’m excited by every opportunity.

Touché, well said! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, Ron. Blending fine art with everyday style is no easy feat, but Glow Art® brings a unique, transcendent energy to fashion that feels both personal and poetic. We wish you endless success as you continue turning light into wearable art.
